Welcome to the “Introduction to Solid State Physics and Devices” course. This course covers the fundamental concepts that determine the electrical, optical and magnetic properties of metals, semiconductors, and insulators. Materials are presented in a logical order from the simple to the more complex: atoms to crystals (solids); and then the roles of bonding, structure (atomic, crystalline, defect, energy band) and composition in influencing and controlling physical properties are discussed. Particular attention is given to the characteristics of semiconductors. Semiconductor devices and microfabrication techniques are also covered.
